Interesting list. I’ve read most of McCarthy. I actually read Gulag but don’t remember much. You’re right. I need to read Sula again.

It's probably better than you remember . . . I guess what I mean is that in the case of some books, your sensitivity/savviness as a reader has to grow to where you're in sync with the writer. I'm sure lots of readers read books they're not ready for and toss them aside believing the fault's in the writer (and, well, sometimes it is). Isn't it true that once in a while we take up a book for the third or fourth time and finally achieve lift off--aren't there books on our shelves with stubs of paper stuck somewhere in the early pages, marking where we threw in the towel when younger? I can think of two in my case, JUSTINE and ULYSSES. Anyway, SULA's full of great sentences and the story presages Morrison's greatness to come. Thanks for your note!
