Malamud wrote The Natural while teaching at Oregon State College (since aUniversity, but not while he was there) in Corvallis, where I was born in 1952 when this book was published. My dad worked there in the library before moving to the US Bureau of Commercial Fishers in Seattle when I was 4.

I keep learning new stuff about you! Malamud in Oregon seems like an enormous mismatch, doesn't it? Love your newsletter.

Thank you, David. Yes, a mismatch for any easterner, a cow college at that time and Malamud was there for years, not just a short time. The Oregon State University now has a great reputation, particularly for the natural sciences, world class Oceanography graduate school as just one example. A former student is tenured in English there, Rebecca Olson. I have a photo of her with Ursula K.Le Guin when she was still in high school. She has an intimate relationship with several British libraries because of important research she conducted on tapestries, ekphrasis, and Shakespeare. PhD from Brandeis, well-published.
