I loved Catcher in the Rye when I was 14, but didn’t like it as an adult.

Barb, read what I wrote in response to Judy Jernberg [BYP 1973]--your note respresents the opposite phenomenon--when your reading sensibility develops beyond where it was when you loved a book years earlier. We've all had that experience as well.

I’ve definitely given second, third, and even fourth chances before some books click.

Just to let you know, I'm having a lot of fun with '51. A bit embarrassed, though, as I note far too many titles I've not read...I mean, I've HAD 70-some years to do so. I aim to complete by year's end!

Good deal! Let me point out that I had a three-year jump on 1951 but have read precious few myself--besides the ones on my list, I've read only THE HIVE, MOLLOY, and LIE DOWN IN DARKNESS. I've read other books by Hawkes, Heinlein, Capote, Manning, and Steinbeck. The bestsellers of the day always felt like big male books and I wasn't drawn to them when there was so much I wanted to read. MEMOIRS OF HADRIAN I should try again because it's a classic and has been well-regarded for years. Anyway, I applaud your initiative! Don't fade!

Great list- what I missed being born that year. Consciousness started ten years later…
