Jeez, David, reading your lists (all pf 'em, but I'm thinking now of this one) makes me feel soooo DUMB! Who'd a thunk there was so much to think about when writers go and do some writin'?
Yeah, but it's like muscle memory in playing an instrument--you don't have to think, you just have to do. But you need the 10,000 hours before that. Maybe musicians give themselves coded reminders as they play, but there's no way to think of all the stuff you've integrated into your playing. When you say someone;s on autopilot that sounds bad/robotic . . . but being in the groove is like that--there's the expression: I had to get out of my own way, which I think means you have to let go of part of your psyche in order to do a good job with the stuff another part of your psyche does well.
